"Dans la peau" by Peter Lindbergh

Hussein Chalayan is not interested in fashion by itself. Still, he is one of the most important and original designers in the UK. He was awarded as the Best Britain designer of the year in 1999 and 2000. The designer, born in Nicosia, considers that he doesn’t have a signature design. His work is based in compositions, mechanical shapes working with fluid shapes. It’s more like an study of the body and how this works with its environment, being this physical space or socio-cultural circumstances.

Earthbound, the last collection presented by Chalayan, wasn’t as striking or controversial as some of his past collections but it is still very interesting.

Inspired by his urban surroundings, in the streets of London, Chalayan designed a collection where the gray color and the architectural shapes are predominant without loosing sexy details and focalized color. It’s imposible not to pay attention to his use of unconventional materials to create different textures and shapes. Asphalt, concrete, this is the feeling you get from most of the pieces of this collection. But there is also sexy element such as tigh-high leather boots. To the end of the runway show there was more presence of color, with applications of intense red and yellow leather. This collection, even though it was inspired by a gray city, still captures the sexy escence of the UK capital.

Earthbound presents interesting contributions regarding textures, materials and details with architectural inspiration. Nevertheless, let’s hope to see collections with more cultural analysis and Chalayan’s characteristic intellectual approach, again.
